What is a Podiatrist?
A podiatrist is a doctor of podiatric medicine, a DPM, who is a licensed health care professional with years of training and education to bring you the best care and expertise possible. While possessing the knowledge to diagnose the source of specific foot related issues, a podiatrist specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of foot, ankle, and lower leg issues.
Podiatrists undergo conventional medical training, as well as special training on the foot, ankle, and lower leg. In all 50 states, DC, and Puerto Rico they are required to pass rigorous state and territory specific board examination before they are licensed to take care of you from the knee down and must continue education throughout their career to maintain their licensure. In short, they know the top of your foot like the back of their hand!

Foot Facts
- Your feet have a quarter of all the bones in your body by number. That’s 52 bones! So it’s important to take care of them and see one of our friendly podiatrists if there seems to be something wrong with your feet.
- It’s not uncommon for you to experience foot pain. 75% of all Americans experience health issues that may require them to seek out the expertise of a podiatrist.
- Your feet can really perform under pressure. While walking, there are times when the pressure on your feet exceeds your body weight. When running, it can be up to four times the pressure of your body weight.
- A single foot contains 26 bones, 33 joints, 107 ligaments, 19 muscles, and tendons to hold the whole structure together. That’s a lot to keep maintained. Take care of your feet!
- The largest single contributor to foot health issues is neglect. A very small percentage of Americans are actually born with podiatric issues, but rather small issues develop into larger ones without immediate care.
- With age, women experience chronic foot pain more often than men. High heels and unsupportive footwear are two of the main culprits. Don’t be afraid to kick off the heels, ladies.
- The foot is often one of the first body parts to show signs of serious medical conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, and heart disease.
Your feet are an extremely important part of your body, and it’s important to make sure to keep them healthy and strong. Prevention is key to proper foot health.
